The King: Eternal Monarch

Story

The King: Eternal Monarch is a 2020 South Korean romantic-fantasy television series that captured the attention of audiences worldwide. Starring Lee Min-ho, Kim Go-eun, Woo Do-hwan, Kim Kyung-nam, Jung Eun-chae, and Lee Jung-jin, the show was written by Kim Eun-sook and produced by Hwa&Dam Pictures and Studio Dragon. Premiering on both SBS TV and Netflix on April 17, 2020, the series unfolds against the backdrop of two parallel worlds.

Emperor Lee Gon of the Kingdom of Corea, portrayed by Lee Min-ho, discovers a portal to an alternate reality opened by his half-uncle, Lee Lim (played by Lee Jung-jin). In this parallel world, the Republic of Korea exists in lieu of the Kingdom. The narrative follows Lee Gon's quest to end Lee Lim's malevolent actions and retrieve the missing half of Manpasikjeok, a mythical flute serving as a portal between the two realms.

Anticipated as one of the standout series of the first half of 2020, the show boasts an ensemble cast, renowned screenwriter, extensive publicity, and a substantial production budget. Not only did it set a record for SBS's highest 2020 Friday-Saturday drama premiere ratings, but it also dominated the weekly Wavve drama chart for eight consecutive weeks. Furthermore, the series earned popularity on Netflix, becoming the most popular Korean drama series in India, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and one of the top two in the U.S.

Despite these achievements, "The King: Eternal Monarch" received mixed reviews and faced lower-than-expected domestic TV viewership ratings in later episodes. Critics attributed this to competition from streaming platforms and criticism of the screenplay, production, and various controversies.

The storyline centers around Lee Gon's attempt to traverse into an alternate reality where he encounters detective Jeong Tae-eul, portrayed by Kim Go-eun. Recognizing her from an identity card obtained during the turning point of his childhood—his father's assassination—Lee Gon is entangled in a battle against his half-uncle, Lee Lim, who moves between the two parallel worlds.

The main cast includes Lee Min-ho as Lee Gon and his Republic of Korea counterpart, Lee Ji-hun. Kim Go-eun plays Jeong Tae-eul and her Kingdom of Corea counterpart, Luna. Woo Do-hwan portrays Jo Yeong, the Captain of the Royal Guard in the Kingdom, and his Republic of Korea counterpart, Jo Eun-sup. Kim Kyung-nam takes on the roles of Kang Shin-jae, a detective in the Republic of Korea, and his Kingdom of Corea counterpart, Kang Hyeon-min. Jung Eun-chae plays Koo Seo-ryeong, the first female prime minister of the Kingdom, and her Republic of Korea counterpart, Koo Eun-ah. Lastly, Lee Jung-jin is featured as Prince Imperial Geum, Lee Lim.

The intricate plot explores themes of love, power, and parallel universes, weaving a complex narrative that unfolds across multiple dimensions. Despite facing criticism, "The King: Eternal Monarch" remains a visually stunning and thematically rich series that has left a lasting impact on audiences worldwide.
