"The Atypical Family" (Korean: 히어로는 아닙니다만) is a 2024 South Korean television series that aired on JTBC from May 4 to June 9, 2024, and is also available for streaming on Netflix in select regions. Starring Jang Ki-yong, Chun Woo-hee, Go Doo-shim, and Claudia Kim, the series revolves around the Bok family, whose members, except for the father, possess inherited superpowers from their ancestors.
The protagonist, Bok Gwi-ju (played by Jang Ki-yong), has the ability to revisit past happy memories through time travel. However, following the tragic death of his wife, he struggles with depression and loses this ability. His sister, Bok Dong-hee (portrayed by Claudia Kim), once had the power of flight but faces challenges due to obesity. Their mother, Bok Man-heum (Go Doo-shim), has precognitive dreams that have brought the family wealth but suffers from insomnia, which now prevents her from accessing her powers.
The narrative takes an intriguing turn when the family's abilities start diminishing due to modern-day ailments such as depression, insomnia, and obesity. Their lives undergo a significant change upon encountering Do Da-hae (played by Chun Woo-hee), a mysterious woman who becomes entangled with Bok Gwi-ju and his family. Da-hae's arrival coincides with Gwi-ju overcoming depression and regaining his time-travel ability, sparking a tumultuous on-off relationship between them.
Central to the storyline are the power struggles within both families, exacerbated by their contrasting motives and alliances. Da-hae initially seeks marriage with Gwi-ju to gain access to the Bok family fortune, which sparks conflicts involving her conniving step-family, particularly her manipulative mother, Baek Il-hong (Kim Geum-sun).
Meanwhile, a subplot unfolds around Bok I-Na (portrayed by Park So-yi), Gwi-ju's teenage daughter, who grapples with her ability to read minds upon making eye contact. Despite her unique ability, I-Na faces challenges at school, including bullying and social isolation.
Throughout the series, themes of family dynamics, personal growth, and the impact of supernatural abilities on everyday life are explored. The narrative weaves together elements of romance, familial bonds, and personal redemption against a backdrop of interpersonal conflict and supernatural intrigue.
With a talented ensemble cast and a blend of drama, romance, and fantasy, "The Atypical Family" offers viewers a compelling exploration of identity, ambition, and the complexities of familial relationships in a modern yet fantastical setting.
